Madeira is a destination that you can visit perfectly throughout the whole year. But during the month of December you can be sure that the ´Pearl in the Atlantic´ is extra beautiful! Many streets are decorated with Christmas light decorations, in various ways. Each year it is a surprise to see which decorations are newly designed and it is always a pleasure to see old ´friends´ again.
It is a huge operation, a team of experts starts in November to put all the lights, so the illumination can start on the 1st of December. While you are walking in Funchal along the Avenida do Mar through the old town, the city center into the direction of the Lido area, you wish you had an extra pair of eyes to absorb all the Christmas light decorations even better. Why not take a break on the Avenida Arriaga, stop at one of of the stalls and drink a freshly made poncha or a locally liqueur served in a chocolate cup (available in milk, pure and white chocolate)? At the same time you can do some last minute Christmas shopping and buy lovely artisan items, made by local craftsmen and -women.
Also outside Funchal there is more than enough to see. The light chains along the hillsides show you the map of street plan, it looks like pearl necklaces are spread along the slopes.
Many villages have there own decoration, for example Ponta do Sol is absolutely worth a visit. Along the promenade you will find a lovely display that surprises everybody each year again.
We give you already some photo-impressions of previous years, to get into the Christmas spirit.
We all wish you happy holidays and are looking forward to see you soon!
