The question "Where the *bleep* is Madeira?" might be a question in the mind of a few people. Okay ... maybe not with the *bleep* included, but at least the question has been asked by many in the past. Or could it be that you came to this web-page because you where searching for "where is Madeira?" via Google? If that is the case then let me immediately help you with the answer ....
Madeira Island is quite alone in the Atlantic Ocean... The island is located 967 km south west of Lisbon. The African coastline is closer by: about 700 km directly west of Casablanca, Morocco. The Canary Islands are the closest by: around 450 km to the south way and to reach the Azores from Madeira you must travel 965 km to the north west.
In the past the location of Madeira was very important, it was the last stop for the ships before they crossed the Atlantic Ocean. On Madeira they could repair the ships in case they were damaged along the way, and it was a great opportunity to load fresh water, fruit and vegetables on board before it was time to start the long journey to North- or South America, Africa and the far east.
Nowadays it is luckily much easier to travel around the world!
There are direct flights to Madeira from 12 different countries, and with a stop over in Lisbon or Porto there are much more combinations possible. For example the flight time from Lisbon to the Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport is 1 hour 40 minutes.
Many cruise ships do a stop over at Madeira, but to be honest a visit of 1 or 2 days is not enough. Many cruise ships guests come back to Madeira for a longer stay, to explore the beauty of ´The Green Pearl of the Atlantic`.
We are looking forward to see you soon!
