Madeira Flower Festival

1 min read

Each year after Easter, the city of Funchal changes into a stage of a luxurious treat for the senses. It is known as the famous Madeira Flower Festival (pt: Festa da Flor), when Madeira celebrates spring and the season’s exuberant flowering, which is even more intense in Madeira thanks to its subtropical climate.

The celebrations begin on Saturday morning with the children’s parade, when thousands of kids visits the city's Praça do Município (located in the city centre) where they will build a wall of flowers called 'The Wall of Hope'.

But that is not all! There is another outstanding event the next day, namely the Grand Flower Parade with several floats and hundreds of participants proudly showing off the island’s local flowers. Dancing from one end of the main street to the other end filling the air with soft, ephemeral perfumes.

At the same time as these events take place, there are other activities in honour of the flower and nature. The carpets of flowers designed by various artists, located in the central plate of Avenida Arriaga. Also, the Flower Exhibition in Praça do Povo and the “Wall of Hope” in Largo do Colégio, culminating in a ceremony that is a true appeal for peace, are two events not to be missed.
