The Madeira Wine Festival (Festa do Vinho) is one of Madeira's top tourist events that pays gratifying tribute to the precious nectar and its undeniable socioeconomic importance. This event will take place this year from August 27th to September 10th.
During the harvest time, which takes place in late August and early September,the Madeira Wine Festival event seeks to recreate old habits of the Madeiran population associated with the secular precepts of grapevines.
The celebrations took place in the past in Funchal from the end of the seventies of the last century. Now a still on-going annual event which also includes the European Week of Folklore, decorations, exhibitions and live paintings alluding everything related to the wine, and diverse spectacles of light and traditional music.
The closing of this 'Festa' takes place in the Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, also knwon as the 'Festa das Vindimas' (the Harvest Festival). Estreito de Câmara de Lobos parish, 12 km from Funchal, the live wine harvests are an excellent opportunity to take part in one of the oldest local traditions, whether picking grapes or following the grape harvester groups.
